North Cascades
Mt. Baker — Glacier, Wa
Get away from it all for a while and treat yourself to a cozy cabin stay in Glacier, a little Washington ski town (not to be confused with Glacier National Park in Montana), surrounded by towering evergreen trees and panoramic mountain views, just outside the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest boundary. Mt. Baker offers access to some of my favorite hikes and scenery in all of the Evergreen state!
During your stay, enjoy the scenic drive along Mount Baker Highway (542), offering stunning views of old growth forests, snow-capped peaks and alpine meadows with beautiful wildflower blooms in summer. On your way up, stop for coffee and breakfast burritos at Wake N’ Bakery, then take a short detour to explore the beautiful Nooksack Falls and other riverside stops along the Shuksan River. Make your way up to Heather Meadows and Picture Lake, then finally Artist Point. Whether you’re seasoned hikers or want something easy and relaxing, Artist Point is a gorgeous spot with epic mountain vistas and a vast network of trails ranging from easy walks, challenging summit climbs, or multi-day backpacking treks!
In winter, hit the slopes at Mt. Baker Ski Area, renowned for its deep powder and breathtaking vistas! Fun fact: Mt. Baker holds the record for highest snowfall anywhere in the world: 1,140 inches (95 feet) in the winter of 1998-99. Not a skier? Consider a snowshoe up to Artist Point—or enjoy the comfort of the Heather Meadows lodge and the cabin cats.

North Cascades National Park
Nicknamed the American Alps, this region of the Cascades is known for its wild alpine landscapes and grueling backpacking trails into some of the most rugged wilderness in the lower 48, with craggy mountain peaks, alpine meadows, unbelievably turquoise lakes, cascading waterfalls, and glacial melt rivers of a most brilliant blue.
Don't miss the chance to drive the scenic North Cascades Highway, known as the "Cascade Loop," for breathtaking views of rugged peaks and pristine wilderness. Ross Lake Recreation Area offers some more accessible adventures including beautiful scenic drives, boating on pristine turquoise waters (and boat-in camping!), or if you’re up for more of a wilderness adventure, hike into North Cascades National Park or the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Park. Keep your camera ready for glimpses of elusive wildlife, including bears, deer, and mountain goats!
For a few weeks in autumn (late September thru mid-October), the stretch of highway and mountains between Mazama and Diablo Lake lights up with larch trees which turn a brilliant yellow gold before losing their needles. But beware: with the peak larch season come the swarms of dazed hikers caught by the larch madness.

Central Cascades
Mount Rainier/Tahoma
If you’re making a trip here, you can’t leave out a stay at this iconic national park! You might know this mountain by the name Rainier, but that isn’t its original name. The Puyallup tribe gave it the name Tahoma which means “the Mother of Waters”, and they revere her for the many life-giving waters which flow from her peak. It was then re-“named” by British explorer Captain George Vancouver after his friend Peter Rainier, a British admiral… who battled against the United States in the Revolutionary War. So, uh… maybe let’s consider going back to her original, way-cooler (and way more respectful) title.
Tahoma is Washington’s tallest peak, sitting at 14,411 feet, with views so iconic it’s on our license plates. It’s also one of five active volcanoes in Washington!
While you’re here, hike through old-growth forests, marvel at cascading waterfalls, catch glimpses of wildlife roaming free, then drive up to Paradise or Sunrise and immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the resplendent Tahoma. In July through late August, enjoy the brilliant wildflower blooms in the alpine meadows! In winter, strap on your snowshoes to explore snowy trails around Paradise, or ski or board over at White Pass. For even more of a thrill, consider booking a guided climb to the summit!
Where to stay for Mt. Rainier & White Pass:
Year-round: Ashford provides the best access to the Nisqually and Paradise areas of Mt. Rainier National Park, which are generally open year-round.
Summer: Packwood provides the best access to Sunrise area of Mt. Rainier, and is reasonably close to Paradise as well.
Winter: If you’re looking to ski at White Pass, stay in Packwood. If you’re looking to spend time snowshoeing in Paradise at Mt. Rainier, opt for Ashford.

If you ask me, there’s hardly a place on this planet that offers as much ‘bang for the buck’ when it comes to scenery, as the Olympic peninsula of Washington! Within a day’s drive, you can explore epic mountain vistas, wildflower meadows, lush mossy rainforests and old growth, rugged coastlines with tide pools and sea stacks, cascading waterfalls and rivers, and more.
While some of the popular tourist destinations are quite accessible and easy to get to, there are miles and miles (and miles) of epic backpacking trails that take you into some of the most remote wilderness in the state.
Fun fact: when it comes to sound pollution, the Hoh Rainforest is one of the quietest places on the planet.
