North Cascades Proposal

A surprise for all three of us, this proposal was, and a story I’ll remember forever.

These two, whom I would soon know as Nicole and Stephen, were enjoying a romantic picnic at this overlook, overlooking the absolute bluest lake I’ve ever seen. The sun was starting to set, casting golden rays across the whole landscape, and it couldn’t have been more picturesque. I was happy, and feeling fantastic, and in a highly out-of-character moment for someone as shy and introverted as me, I introduced myself and asked if I could take a few photos.

They happily agreed, and I took a few, then as I handed my phone to Stephen for him to write down his email address, he stealthily typed out on my notes that he’s about to propose.

Here I was, on hour one of being here in Washington, and I already knew deep down in my soul that everything was right. My heart fluttered. I stepped back, tried to look preoccupied as I slyly got into position, Stephen proposed, Nicole said yes!

It was a chance moment, and one that felt like magic, or a gift, a drop of pure serendipity from the sky, or maybe the glowing sun, or perhaps the mountains themselves. Had I arrived just two minutes later, it might not have happened. Had I chosen to go anywhere else in the state that first day, it wouldn’t have happened. Nonetheless, we became quick friends, taking a few more photos, sharing picnic goodies and a heart-to-heart about things like art, music, discipline, self-worth, self-love, growth, and serendipity, before we parted ways for the evening—but not for good.

I’m so thankful I was there, and that I had the confidence to walk up to two perfect strangers and ask for a photo, because ultimately it means that Stephen and Nicole now have this beautiful, milestone moment—the beginning of the rest of their lives—captured in time forever. Decades from now, they’ll still be able to revisit this magical night. They can point to it, maybe show their kids one day, and say aloud: this is when (and where) it all began. That’s the power of photography—it isn’t about the epic Instagram shots, it isn’t about the cool factor, the most spectacular location, the perfect angle or the perfect golden hour glow. It’s about the moment, and being able to have it forever. Being able to hold onto your story and share it with others, too.

If there’s a lesson here, I think it’s this: If there’s a thing or a place that sets your soul alight, get after it and make it happen. There’s good stuff waiting for you there. ✨
